For those who enjoy surfing, Puerto Escondido is an exceptional destination. Zicatela Beach is internationally known for its big waves and is one of the most famous surf spots in the world.

If you prefer calmer water, Carrizalillo and Punta Colorada are excellent choices for swimming, sunbathing, or simply spending an unhurried day by the sea.

The ocean has plenty more to offer. Depending on the season, you can go out to watch dolphins and whales, go diving, or spend a day deep-sea fishing.

Manialtepec Lagoon is another place we especially recommend. It's a wonderful spot for birdwatching and enjoying nature. During the rainy months, between summer and early fall, you can also experience bioluminescence; at night, the water lights up in small flashes as it moves, creating a truly unique natural spectacle.

About 40 kilometers from Puerto Escondido lies Escobilla, one of the region's most important sites for sea turtle protection. During nesting season, and depending on conditions, it's possible to witness the arrival of large numbers of turtles on the beach, and for those who get to experience it, it's a truly memorable moment.

To get a feel for the culture and atmosphere of the coast, we recommend walking along the Adoquín, trying a nieve (local ice) or a tlayuda, and taking time to wander through the local market. You'll find handicrafts, jewelry, textiles, and clothing made by artisans from different indigenous communities in Oaxaca.

If you have a few extra days, it's worth heading inland to the Sierra Madre del Sur. The landscape changes completely; you'll find small mountain towns, winding roads, and some interesting organic coffee plantations from the region.

If you'd rather explore inland, there are also waterfalls, roads, and trails you can cover by bike that lead to the landscapes and communities nearby.
